Seven days

We went to New Jersey and stayed with G,R, and A. A is experimenting with standing and taking steps. Strange and wonderful and illicit-feeling to be living closely with other people. But also a feeling of familiarity because of their time living with us at the beginning of the pandemic.

We went hiking in Norvin Green State Forest. People masked up when passing one another on the trail. There is this strange sense of wanting to behave normally when we are doing something that’s the opposite, of acknowledging danger while trying to ignore it.

We go to Asbury Park beach, which disappoints us because we need to pay to walk onto the beach. The surf is high and swimming is not allowed, though surfing is. We sit on a blanket and try to keep A from eating sand.

We drive to an overlook park where we can se the New York City skyline and where there is a piece of concrete and steel fro one of the World Trade Centers. We think about what it would have been like had we been standing here when they fell.

Home again, it is suddenly fall. Michaelmas Daisies everywhere at the boat ramp.
